Ancient Beliefs about the shape of the Earth
Ancient Near East
- Daniel 4:10-11 — a vision of a tree so high that it can be seen from everywhere on earth
- Isaiah 40:22 — the sky as a tent, pitched on the circular earth
The Hellenistic World
See Between Mesopotamia and Egypt — especially the section "The World View(s) of Bible Times". The people of the Bible truly lived "between Mesopotamia and Egypt" in Old Testament times, and this is reflected in the Bible's view of the natural world. This understanding survived right up to the 12th Century AD — when it was the assumption of both sides in the debate about where the Sun goes during the night.
