KJV

35 Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name: 36 If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.

Does the Second Law of Thermodynamics disprove Evolution?

It is claimed, for example broken link (see ✽ below) — but also occasionally by Christadelphians — that the evolution of living things is made impossible by entropy as envisaged in the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

✽This was a website of Turkish creationist Adnan Oktar (a.k.a. Haruh Yahya). Since he has been sentenced to prison his websites have been disappearing. His book Darwinism Refuted can still be found online. From p.295:

Evolutionary theory ignores this fundamental law of physics. The mechanism offered by evolution totally contradicts the second law. The theory of evolution says that disordered, dispersed, and lifeless atoms and molecules spontaneously came together over time, in a particular order, to form extremely complex molecules such as proteins, DNA, and RNA, whereupon millions of different living species with even more complex structures gradually emerged. According to the theory of evolution, this supposed process—which yields a more planned, more ordered, more complex and more organized structure at each stage—was formed all by itself under natural conditions. The law of entropy makes it clear that this so-called natural process utterly contradicts the laws of physics.

Why this argument is wrong

The sun's constant input of energy into the earth means that objections to evolution based on Thermodynamics are not relevant. Earth's biosphere is not a closed system.

Jeremiah was not prophesying against the false argument from thermodynamics, but what he says about the Sun in this verse is more than enough to show the flaw in it!

No. 9 in the Scientific American target list of embarrassing "creationist nonsense" is "The Second Law of Thermodynamics says that systems must become more disordered over time. Living cells therefore could not have evolved from inanimate chemicals, and multicellular life could not have evolved from protozoa."
