“I beseech thee, my son, look upon the heaven and the earth, and all that is therein, and consider that God made them of things that were not; and so was mankind made likewise.”


This is the first occurrence of Creatio ex nihilo ("Creation from nothing") in the Bible, dating from the intertestamental period. Compare Genesis 1:1-3, which begins with water and darkness before the Creator's "Let there be light!"
