Problems
Disputed Authority of Science
Suggested New Topic Short title: Disputed Authority of Science Proposed by: Bruce 00:43, 19 July 2018 (UTC) P, Q or RC? Problem Description: We have no general agreement on the legitimacy of arguments that constrain Biblical interpretation for scientific reasons, or of arguments that constrain scientific thinking for Bible-based reasons. This is problematic. Comment by proposer: Our lives and livelihood depend on practical applications of the discoveries of science, but "science denialism" is common, and growing world wide. Similarly, the authority of Scripture is questioned. This background exacerbates the problem. Lack of clear guidelines on this matter might be the reason why some have not accepted the invitation to participate in our present project. Next step: Critical appraisal here (where it may be reworded, judging by face-to-face discussion! — BP)
Questions
PQRC 3 Children of Abraham *
Suggested New Topic Short title: Children of Abraham Proposed by: Bruce (talk) 12:22, 12 July 2018 (UTC) P, Q or RC? Question (Biblical interpretation) Description: Is it essential to be descended from a literal Adam to have salvation in Jesus Christ, in light of his own statement that "God [could] make children for Abraham out of ... stones"? (Matthew 3:9, Luke 3:8) Comment by proposer: This arises from discussion about common ancestry here. Next step: Critical appraisal completed here, now being discussed at Children of Abraham.
PQRC 4 Meaning of "very good" *
Suggested New Topic Short title: Meaning of "very good" Proposed by: Paul P, Q or RC? Question (Biblical interpretation) Description: In Genesis 1:31 all of God’s creation was described as “very good”. This has been taken to mean that humans (as part of God’s creation) were neither immortal nor (yet) dying. Comment by proposer: This is based on the review of a video by Ron Cowie that was forwarded to me by Daphne. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYQMY6TwXVM&list=PLapIoMHXBxJ9icjxg885kQnvMro-toPZW Next step: Critical Appraisal completed here, has been discussed at Meaning of "very good", ready for personal conclusions to be written up at [[User:Yourname/PQRC 4]]
PQRC 5 How should we understand the Tree of Life? *
changed from How should we understand Eden?
Suggested New Topic Short title: How should we understand Eden?the Tree of Life?Proposed by: Paul P, Q or RC? Question (Biblical Interpretation) Description: How should we understand the Garden of Eden? What is the significance of the two trees? What is the significance of being expelled from the Garden (Genesis 3:22-24)?How should we understand the Tree of Life?Comment by proposer: This is based on the review of a video by Ron Cowie that was forwarded to me by Daphne. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYQMY6TwXVM&list=PLapIoMHXBxJ9icjxg885kQnvMro-toPZW Next step: Precise formulation of the question here
Is Reconciliation Possible? *
Suggested New Topic Short title: Is Reconciliation Possible?(WITHDRAWN)P, Q or RC? Question Description: There is disagreement that God's word can be misconstrued to fit with some discoveries of science.Comment by proposer: There are a number of factors creating an environment where God's word is disputed on the assumed acceptance of aspects of science that require reinterpretation of the Bible.Next step: (none, question withdrawn)
How does Jesus' endorsement of marriage tell us how to read Genesis?
Suggested New Topic Short title: Jesus' reading of Genesis Proposed by: Colin (talk) 21:49, 30 November 2018 (UTC) P, Q or RC? Question Description: There is disagreement that God's word can be misconstrued to fit with some discoveries of science. Comment by proposer: There are a number of factors in the discussion creating an environment where God's word is disputed on the assumed acceptance of aspects of science that require reinterpretation of the Bible. Next step: Now another editor (not the proposer) can create a new numbered page for this topic's Critical Appraisal by clicking here and inserting this: {{subst:CriticalAppraisal}}.
Is "creation or evolution" a false dichotomy?
Suggested New Topic Short title: Is "creation or evolution" a false dichotomy? Proposed by: Bruce (talk) 10:26, 6 November 2019 (AEDT) P, Q or RC? Question Description: See False Dichotomy. If there is reason to believe that God uses evolution as part of his creative repertoire, then the choice "Creation or Evolution" is a false dichotomy. Comment by proposer: A "creation or evolution" dichotomy is frequently taken for granted. In my view this shows a misunderstanding of both creation and evolution as correctly understood in harmony with the Bible; but this is a vast topic, and we can isolate from it the much smaller question of whether "or" in the phrase "creation or evolution" is sound. Reconciliation Challenges
PQRC 6 Creation in Six Days? *
Suggested New Topic Short title: Creation in Six Days? Proposed by: Bruce (talk) 07:29, 12 July 2018 (UTC) P, Q or RC? Reconciliation Challenge Description: According to one common understanding, Scripture teaches that creation took six literal days in Genesis 1:1 to 2:3 and elsewhere (e.g. Exodus 20:11 and 31:17). There is a body of scientific evidence requiring it to have taken very much longer. Can these be reconciled? Comment by proposer: This view has become common among Christadelphians since the middle of the 20th Century. Next step: Critical Appraisal passed; discussion continuing at Creation in six days? and links from there.
PQRC 7 The Origin of Mortality *
Suggested New Topic Short title: The Origin of Mortality Proposed by: Paul P, Q or RC? Reconciliation Challenge Description: On the basis of Romans 5:12,17-19 it is said that there was no mortality or death in the world before they commenced with Adam, about seven thousand years ago, and that if humans or other creatures existed before Adam, they must have been immortal or "something else". On the other hand there is scientific evidence that living things have been dying for millions of years. Can these be reconciled? Comment by proposer: This is based on the review of a video by Ron Cowie that was forwarded to me by Daphne. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYQMY6TwXVM&list=PLapIoMHXBxJ9icjxg885kQnvMro-toPZW Next step: Critical Appraisal passed; awaiting summary of what is to be reconciled at The Origin of Mortality
PQRC 8 The Punishment of Adam *
Suggested New Topic Short title: The Punishment of Adam Proposed by: Paul P, Q or RC? Reconciliation Challenge Description: It has been said that after sin had entered the world and God’s judgements had been pronounced, the man Adam was altered so that he would return to the dust (a punishment on the man Adam only). Yet animals are mortal too — it is a scientific fact that all animate creatures die. Can these be reconciled? Comment by proposer: This is based on the review of a video by Ron Cowie that was forwarded to me by Daphne. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYQMY6TwXVM&list=PLapIoMHXBxJ9icjxg885kQnvMro-toPZW Next step: passed Critical Appraisal here; discussion has run off the rails at The punishment of Adam.
