BibleNew TestamentMatthew

REB

The devil took him next to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their glory.

To see all the kingdoms of the world from a very high mountain requires

  1. the earth to be flat — The Circle of the Earth, not the sphere of the Earth! — and
  2. miraculously good eyesight.

Even if Matthew intends this to be read as an unrealistic exaggeration [the devil?] note the implicit understanding of geography: a high mountain rising above a plane world on which the kingdoms are visible.
