BibleOld TestamentJeremiah

KJV

22 Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O Lord our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things.

NRSV

22 Can any idols of the nations bring rain?
Or can the heavens give showers?
Is it not you, O Lord our God?
We set our hope on you,
for it is you who do all this.

RSV

22 Are there any among the false gods of the nations that can bring rain?
Or can the heavens give showers?
Art thou not he, O LORD our God?
We set our hope on thee,
for thou doest all these things.

Jeremiah attributes the coming of rain to Yahweh, by contrast with false gods. Many Jews and Christians agree with this and believe it, meanwhile accepting the science of meteorology for explanation and prediction without any sense of contradiction! Believers who have the same approach to the science of evolutionary biology see no difference between meteorology and evolution, and speak ruefully of "Theistic Meteorology" — of which this verse is an example.

Is Meteorology really analogous to Theistic Evolution? Neither Meteorology nor Evolution necessarily denies the hand of God by studying natural causes and effects.
