BibleNew Testament1 Corinthians

NRSV

45 Thus it is written, ‘The first man, Adam, became a living being’; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. 46 But it is not the spiritual that is first, but the physical, and then the spiritual. 47 The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is [a] from heaven.

[a] Other ancient authorities add the Lord

KJV

45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.

47 The first man is of the earth, earthy; the second man is the Lord from heaven.

REB

The first man is from earth, made of dust: the second man is from heaven.

NET

The first man is from the earth, made of dust; the second man is from heaven.

Who is "the first man" in this verse? See F.F. Bruce: "a man of dust" and Mother Earth in the Bible. (NB: past tense was in NRSV is an interpretation. Also found in ESV, NIV, CEV.) —Bruce
