Does Genesis 1:26 refer to Adam or humankind?

"Let us make adam in our image ..."

This clearly doesn't mean just Adam, because the text goes on to say "male and female". Is this just the couple of chapter 2, or all of humankind? The answer depends on how literally we understand the end of verse 30, "and it was so." If this is literally true, the adam created in verse 27 was fruitful, multiplied, replenished the earth, subdued it, and had dominion.

Genesis itself is clear on the question:

He created them male and female; when they were created, he blessed them and named them “humankind.” (Genesis 5:2, NET)
