Psalm 8:1-2
From Reconciling understandings of Scripture and Science

1 O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
3 From the mouths of infants and sucklings
- You have founded strength on account of Your foes,
- to put an end to enemy and avenger.
The Jewish Study Bible Notes
8:3: The 'enemy and avenger' likely refer to sea-monsters, whom God subdued while creating the world. Though this is not mentioned in Genesis, fragments of a creation story known from Ugarit, where God subdues the sea, are found throughout the Bible and in rabbinic literature (see 74.12-17; Job 26.12; Isa. 51.9 n.)
