BibleNew TestamentJohn
KJV

40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

John 12:32, 12:40 and John 12:45-46 are cited here as being relevant to the claim made here and here that to say that certain verses are non-literal "is to say Jesus and apostles were lying".

Note that The Heart was considered to be capable of understanding in the time of Jesus. From modern science we know that the heart is a pump and we understand with the brain, but this part of the verse would have been accepted literally when Jesus said it!

See comment at John 12:32.
